The Kingston Penitentiary is Canada’s oldest maximum security prison opened in 1835 and continuously used until 2013. Former guards that are now guides will take you for a tour through over 180 years of history. Explore the area surrounding the Kingston Penitentiary grounds or take a guided tour and learn about the day-to-day life for guards and inmates, riots, escapes and many interesting stories!

Built between 1870 and 1873, Canada’s award-winning Penitentiary Museum preserves and interprets the history of our federal penitentiaries. The museum operates from May to November.
