More About the Penitentiary

The Kingston Penitentiary is Canada’s oldest maximum security prison opened in 1835 and continuously used until 2013. Former guards that are now guides will take you for a tour through over 180 years of history. Explore the area surrounding the Kingston Penitentiary grounds or take a guided tour and learn about the day-to-day life for guards and inmates, riots, escapes and many interesting stories!

Just a quick walk across from the Kingston Penitentiary is Canada’s Penitentiary Museum, former residence of the Kingston Penitentiary’s warden, which was later transformed into Correctional Service of Canada.

Built between 1870 and 1873, Canada’s award-winning Penitentiary Museum preserves and interprets the history of our federal penitentiaries. The museum operates from May to November.
